Ben has a varied background with expertise in fields from the performing and visual arts to software and ecological informatics. After running a small residential renovation firm in the Pacific Northwest, he decided to pursue an architecture degree to augment his construction experience. While working on his M.Arch at UMass Amherst, Ben was heavily involved in the nascent DesignBuild curriculum and now manages the program in addition to teaching in the Building and Construction Technology department. He is dedicated to integrating design with construction and bridging the divide – real or imagined – between architects and builders.
We learn by doing. Whether it's about affordable housing policy, light frame construction, building code, or digital fabrication techniques...jump in!
I see design as an act of editing. Everything chosen with purpose and intention so that you'd never imagine anything else in their place. No more and nothing less.
Building is the combination of creative problem solving, technical skill, and practical knowledge. For me, turning a vision into a physical reality is the most rewarding part of the process.
